The markets sector now has its own independently produced performance indicator
For many years there have been a number of existing Indices available for the Shopping Centre, High Streets, and Town Centre sectors – but nothing for Markets.
With the launch of the new UK Markets Index markets will be able to compare their own footfall figures with a national benchmark and enhance understanding of their own market’s performance. Publishing the UK Markets Index will enhance the profile of the Markets sector and enable immediate analysis of how the Markets sector reacts to external factors such as fluctuations in the economy or food scares. In this way we believe the Index will stimulate a new level of media interest in Markets – as it has for other retail sectors.
The Index is the work of PFM, leading counter of footfall in markets, and ROI Team, the UK’s leading research consultancy for the markets’ sector. Nabma, professional association for market owners and managers, is the launch sponsor.
The UK Markets Index is based on aggregated data from the majority of UK markets where footfall is independently counted. Released monthly, the Index provides an at-a-glance readout of:
- Footfall in markets
- National Retail Sales
- Weather conditions
- Context of the UK retail sector and the wider economy
The UKMI is freely available via stakeholders’ websites:
ROI Team, together with PFM Counting Solutions and Nabma, are asking all market managers with existing Footfall counting systems to share their data so that it can be integrated into the Index database. Any market able to share data with The Index will enjoy priority access to the national results. We can also assure you that data from individual markets will never be shared with anyone else. Only national and basket averages will be revealed.
